  • Hi James, I am a MASSIVE fan. Could you show us how you take all these awesome pictures. I am sure you needed to use mirrors and some chopping boards at some point. Please share!

    Hey qtsohg, you’ve got an insider!  You’re quite right; the colour in the liquid shot is actually 4 chopping boards underneath a suspended bowl of water.  When I injected the oil into the water with a syringe the oil refracts the colours.  It’s a brilliant effect.  I hear that you can do a similar technique with some colourful smarties underneath and a pane of glass over the top, sprayed in oil.  I’ll probably try that one soon although the distribution of colour is very important.  Anyone trying this shot: To improve on that particular shot I should have kept the camera in the exact same plane as the water surface.  Doing this will ensure that all oil bubbles will be in focus even with such a narrow depth of field.
